The world's largest plant to absorb carbon from the air has opened in Iceland.

  • The world's largest plant to remove carbon dioxide from the air, called Orca, has begun operations in Iceland.
  • It was built by Switzerland's Climworks and Iceland's Carbfix in partnership with Swiss start-up Climworks AG
  • The name of this plant is orca, which means energy in Icelandic word. It will absorb up to 4,000 tons of CO2 per year.
  • Carbon dioxide captured directly from the air would be deposited underground at a depth of 1,000 meters, where it would be converted to rock.
  • The technology launched could become a major tool in the fight against climate change.



Denmark and Tamil Nadu plan to build an energy island in the Gulf of Mannar.

  • This plan was made as Tamil Nadu wants to expand its footprint in the green energy sector.
  • To achieve this goal, Denmark can invest $5-10 billion in the renewable energy sector in the state.
  • This also includes investment for an energy island in the Gulf of Mannar.
  • With this investment, the island will be able to produce 4-10 GW of energy.
  • The energy island will be constructed in the North Sea.
  • The artificial island in the North Sea will be equal to the size of the 18 football fields.
  • The decision to build the energy island was taken in the backdrop of the European Union’s plan to transform its electricity system to rely on the renewable energy and to increase its offshore wind capacity 25 time by 2050.



Earth observation satellite, Gaofen-5 02, has been launched by China.

  • China successfully launched a new Earth observation satellite, Gaofen-5 02, into space aboard a Long March-4C rocket from Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center in northern China's Shanxi province.
  • The Gaofen-5 02 satellite is the 24th in China's series of Gaofen Earth-observing satellites, which monitor environmental protection efforts and promote monitoring of its natural resources.
  • Gaofen-5 02 is a hyperspectral satellite that will be used for comprehensive environmental monitoring, to improve the hyperspectral observation capability of the country's atmosphere, water and land.



Susanna Clarke won the Women's Award for Fiction for the fantasy novel "Piranesi".

  • British author Susanna Clarke has won the coveted Female Fiction Award for her mind-blowing fantasy novel Piranesi.
  • Clark, 61, was awarded £30,000 ($41,000) for his novel.



NPCI partnered with Fiserv to launch "nFiNi".

  • National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) partnered with Fiserv to launch nFiNi.
  • There is a suite of nFiNi services for issuance of RuPay credit cards by Fintechs and Banks.
  • It is Rupay based API which will promote credit card based products in the country.
  • It is basically a Banking-as-a-Service (BaaS) program as it will provide a range of services to fintechs and banks to distribute RuPay-based credit cards.
  • nFiNi will power the RuPay cards by providing the required facilities through NPCI network and FirstVisionTM from Fiserv. FirstVisionTM is a cloud-based open API integration.
  • NFINI will provide services like mobile app, SMS notifications, digital card provision and other payment transaction facilities.
