  • The species was spotted in Kalatop–Khajjiar Wildlife Sanctuary (>2,500 m) and Gamgul Wildlife Sanctuary (>3,000 m).
  • Sambar deer are normally found in lower Shivalik hills and forests below ~2,000 m.
  • The finding was published in the February 2026 edition of Records of the Zoological Survey of India.
  • The discovery suggests possible shifts in wildlife movement due to climate change, habitat changes, or improved protection in higher forests.
