Researchers at Shenzhen University developed the world’s first zero-carbon direct coal fuel cell (ZC-DCFC).
Generates electricity directly from coal without combustion.
Uses electrochemical oxidation instead of traditional burning.
High efficiency: Potentially up to 2× more efficient than conventional coal power plants.
In-situ carbon capture: Produces high-purity CO₂ without releasing emissions.
Captured CO₂ is converted into useful products like syngas and sodium bicarbonate.
Challenge: High costs may delay large-scale commercial use.
