1. Fugaku retains top spot as world's most powerful supercomputer

  • Fugaku is fully operational and ready to prove itself as the world's most powerful supercomputer.
  • Fugaku is powered by ARM A64FX chips, of which it has 7,630,848 cores. When tested against the HPL supercomputing benchmark, it set a world record of 442 petaflops, and against the high-performance computing artificial intelligence workload (HPC-AI) benchmark it maxed out at 2.0 exaflops, beating the previous record (also held by Fugaku) of 1.4 exaflops set in June 2020.

3. Olive Ridley turtles arrive at Gahirmatha beach for mass nesting

  • The endangered Olive Ridley female turtles have started arriving at the Gahirmatha beach in Odisha's Kendrapara district
  • The world's largest known rookery of these species, to lay eggs, a phenomenon otherwise called 'arribada',
  • Arribada, a Spanish term that describes the unique natural heritage of millions of these marine species converging on the nesting ground for laying eggs


4. The Indian Council of Agricultural Research won the King Bhumibol World Soil Day Award 2020

  • The award was presented annually by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)
  • ICAR India will officially receive the award by Her Royal Highness, Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn of Thailand, during an event in Bangkok in January 2021.
