1. Arvind Kejriwal launches ‘Switch Delhi’ campaign to promote electric vehicles

  • Under its electric vehicle policy, the Delhi government has planned extensive subsidies on purchase of electric two-wheelers and four-wheelers, besides waiving road tax and registration charges
  • More than 6,000 electric vehicles have been purchased since the policy launch in August 2020. The government has also issued tenders for setting up 100 charging stations across the city
  • The government has fixed an ambitious target of 25 per cent electric vehicles among total vehicle registrations in Delhi by 2024

2. Andy Jassy to become Amazon CEO, Jeff Bezos to become executive chairman

  • Amazon CEO and founder Jeff Bezos is stepping down. Replacing the billionaire will be Andy Jassy, who has been working with the company for more than two decades. In a letter to his employees, the outgoing CEO called his successor Jassy “an outstanding leader” and conveyed in him his full confidence

3. India falls to 53rd position in EIU’s Democracy Index

  • India slipped two places to 53rd position in the 2020 Democracy Index’s global ranking, according to The Economist Intelligence Unit
  • Norway topped The Economist Intelligence Unit’s latest Democracy Index report 
  • Out of 167 countries, the Democracy Index classifies 23 countries as full democracies, 52 as flawed democracies, 35 as hybrid regimes and 57 as authoritarian regimes.
  •  India has been classified as a ‘flawed democracy’ along with countries such as the US, France, Belgium and Brazil.

4. Aero India 2021: 13th edition of aerospace and defence exhibition begins in Bengaluru

  • The 13th edition of the Aero India show began at Bengaluru’s Yelahanka Air Force Station on Tuesday
  • The event was inaugurated by Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. Three Mi-17 helicopters took part in the flypast during the inauguration of Aero India-2021
  • India offers a unique opportunity in defence and aerospace manufacturing. Under the Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan, domestic manufacturing of bigger and complex defence platforms has become the focus of the country’s defence policy
