Microsoft to acquire video gaming company Activision Blizzard for $68.7 bn.
- Microsoft Corp. is set to acquire game maker Activision Blizzard Inc. for $68.7 billion in an all-cash transaction. ($95.00 per share).
- The acquisition will boost Microsoft's competitiveness in the mobile gaming business and virtual-reality technology across mobile, PC, console and cloud, and provide the building blocks for the metaverse.
- Activision Blizzard is best known as the creator of Candy Crush and Call of Duty, Xbox, among other major video games.
- Upon completion of the deal, Microsoft will become the world's third-largest gaming company by revenue, behind Tencent and Sony.
- This is the biggest deal Microsoft has ever made and the biggest deal ever in the history of the gaming industry.
SEBI launches mobile app "Saa₹thi" for investor education.
- Markets regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) on January 19, 2022 launched a mobile app on investor education Saa₹thi in Mumbai.
- The new app aims to create awareness among investors about basic concepts of securities market, KYC process, trading and settlement, mutual funds, recent market developments, investor grievance redressal mechanism, etc.
- In the app SaaRthi, R is denoted using the Indian Rupee (INR) symbol.
India and Japan conducted maritime partnership exercise in the Bay of Bengal.
- A maritime partnership exercise was conducted between the Indian Navy and the Japan Maritime Self Defense Force (JMSDF) in the Bay of Bengal in a non-contact mode amid COVID-19.
- The Indian side was represented by Indian Naval Ships (INS) Shivalik and INS Kadmat while JMSDF ships Urga and Hirado participated from the Japanese side.
- To strengthen bilateral relations, promote defense cooperation, enhance mutual understanding and interactivity and share best practices between IN and JMSDF.
Israel completes successful flight test of Arrow-3.
- Israel has completed a successful flight test of the Arrow-3 which is designed to intercept ballistic missiles outside the Earth's atmosphere.
- The test was conducted at a test site in central Israel, and was led by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI).
- It was developed in a joint project between the Missile Defense Organization of the Ministry of Defense and the US Missile Defense Agency.
- After months of delays and technical problems, the Arrow 3 was successfully tested for the first time in February 2018.
- It is considered one of the most powerful weapons of its kind in the world and has been in development since 2008.
India to host AFC Women’s football Asian Cup 2022.
- India is all set to host the AFC Women's Football Asian Cup India 2022 in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and Pune from 20 January 2022.
- The tournament will witness 12 teams competing for the trophy.
- The AFC Women's Asian Cup India will also be the final stage of Asian qualification for the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
- Five teams will qualify directly for the main event while two of them advance to the Inter-Confederation play-offs.
- Japan is the defending champion of the Women's Asian Cup, having won it in 2018.
- Hosts India are placed in Group A along with China, Chinese Taipei and Iran. Meanwhile, Australia, Thailand, the Philippines and Indonesia have been placed in Group B.
- Defending champion Japan finds itself in Group C along with South Korea, Vietnam and Myanmar.
