Jio becomes 1st telco to give 4G mobile services in Ladakh's Pangong Lake.

  • Reliance Jio launched its 4G voice and data services at Spangmik village near Pangong Lake in Ladakh.
  • The telecom operator became the first network to provide 4G mobile connectivity in and around the Pangong area.
  • In Ladakh, the Jio network has been connected via 3 fiber routes, Leh-Srinagar, Leh-Manali (Himachal Pradesh), and Leh-Gurez, to build redundancy.
  • Jio is the only private network operator to provide services in the Zanskar region and Siachen base camps and has provided fiber media connectivity via Gurez and Manali along with the existing Kashmir-Leh route.



India got 180th rank in Environment Performance Index 2022.

  • India has been placed at the bottom on a list of 180 countries judged for their environmental performances by US-based institutions.
  • Denmark topped the 2022 Environmental Performance Index (EPI).
  • The EPI provides a data-driven summary of the state of sustainability around the world.
  • India, with increasingly dangerous air quality and rapidly rising greenhouse gas emissions, falls to the bottom of rankings for the first time.
  • China is placed 161st, with an overall EPI score of 28.4.



Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang declared "Blue Duke" butterfly as the state butterfly of Sikkim.

  • Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, during the World Environment Day celebrations, declared Blue Duke as the State Butterfly of Sikkim.
  • Blue Duke, a native butterfly species of Sikkim, edged past another contender Krishna Peacock to be announced as the State Butterfly of Sikkim.
  • The two butterflies, among the 720-odd butterfly species, had been shortlisted for the State Butterfly nominations.
  • Blue Duke is found at an altitude below 1,500 metres in the Himalayas and is commonly found in places like Pakyong, Passingdong and Hee-Gyathang in Dzongu, Lingee in South Sikkim and Yangsum in West Sikkim and closer to the State capital in places like Tadong and Ranka.



Alok Kumar Choudhary replaces Ashwini Bhatia as the new Managing Director of SBI.

  • India’s largest lender State Bank of India (SBI) has appointed Alok Kumar Choudhary as its new Managing Director (MD) with effect from June 7, 2022.
  • He has replaced former MD Ashwani Bhatia, who took charge as the whole-time member of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI).
  • Apart from Choudhary, SBI with this appointment will have 4 MDs - CS Setty, MD in charge of retail banking; Swaminathan Janakiraman, MD in charge of stressed assets, risk and compliance; and Ashwini Kumar Tewari, MD in charge of international banking - led by the chairman Dinesh Kumar Khara.
  • He also had a stint as the Chief General Manager (CGM) of the SBI’s Delhi Circle for three years.



Avani Lekhara of India won the gold medal in the 10m Air Rifle Standing SH1 category of the Para Shooting World Cup 2022.

  • Tokyo Paralympics champion Avani Lekhara won gold at the Para Shooting World Cup with a world record score of 250.6 in women’s 10m air rifle standing SH1 in Chateauroux, France.
  • The 20-year-old shooter broke her own world record of 249.6 to secure her a spot at the 2024 Paris Paralympics.
  • Poland’s Emilia Babska bagged the silver medal with a total of 247.6, while the bronze went to Anna Normann of Sweden after she shot 225.6.
